The Iceman Cometh, and Then He Didn't

There was a time when, if you wanted something cold in your house, somebody had to bring you cold.

Not a cold thing. Cold itself.

Men harvested enormous blocks of ice from frozen lakes and ponds, stored them in insulated buildings, transported them across the country, and eventually delivered chunks of winter directly to your front door. You put one in an icebox and tried to keep your milk from becoming a biological experiment.

This was an industry. People made their living harvesting ice, transporting ice, selling ice and delivering ice. Families had routines built around the arrival of the iceman.

Then somebody had the audacity to invent a machine that made cold in your kitchen.

Mechanical refrigeration did not arrive without problems. Early refrigerators were expensive. Some were unreliable. Early refrigerants could be dangerous. The established ice industry had plenty of reasons to point out those problems, some perfectly legitimate and others conveniently aligned with the continued employment of people whose business model depended upon Americans buying frozen chunks of lakes.

But the technology improved.

Eventually, refrigerators became safer, cheaper and better. Ice delivery dwindled. The household icebox disappeared. An enormous industry built around harvesting, storing, transporting and delivering ice largely vanished with it.

Civilization as the iceman knew it ended.

Civilization itself did not.

That's worth remembering during our latest technological panic.

Artificial intelligence is obviously not a refrigerator. Its potential consequences are vastly broader, and there are legitimate questions about safety, employment, fraud, privacy, copyright, concentration of power and what happens when increasingly capable systems are entrusted with increasingly important tasks.

Those questions deserve serious attention.

But sometimes our fear isn't really about danger. Sometimes it's about change.

I've spent decades learning things through books, Google, YouTube, websites, forums and endless experimentation. All of those tools were extraordinary improvements over what came before them. I've learned photography and Photoshop that way. I've learned home repairs that way. There is an almost absurd amount of human knowledge sitting a few keystrokes away.

The problem is that finding it can be a mess.

Search for how to hang drywall and you'll discover thousands of videos, articles, advertisements, forum arguments and contradictory instructions. One person insists something must be done one way. Another says the opposite. A third spends twelve minutes telling you about his childhood before getting anywhere near the drywall.

Or wander into practically any plumbing forum, Facebook group or DIY page and ask a straightforward question: "How do I do X?"

Within an hour, you've got a hundred answers from plumbers, contractors, handymen and experienced DIYers scattered across the world.

"You can't do it that way."

"You HAVE to do it that way."

"That's the only way to do it."

"There are twenty ways to do that."

"Call a licensed plumber."

"That's not up to code."

"It's code where I live."

"I've been doing it this way for thirty years."

Eventually a plumber in Yorkshire is arguing with a plumber in Idaho about whether something would pass inspection "here," despite the fact that neither one of them lives within two thousand miles of the sink in question.

And somewhere underneath all of that, the poor bastard who asked how to connect two pipes is no closer to knowing what to do than when he started.

The problem isn't necessarily that these people don't know what they're talking about. Many of them probably do. They may be working under different building codes, dealing with different materials, relying on different techniques or simply disagreeing about the best solution. Building codes vary geographically, and they're apparently different in the fourth dimension too. Advice perfectly appropriate for a house built today may have little resemblance to what someone finds when they open a wall in a house built fifty years ago.

The person asking the question doesn't yet know enough to distinguish between any of those possibilities. That's why they asked the question in the first place.

So they either leave more confused than they arrived, or latch onto whichever answer sounds most convincing and hope they picked the right stranger on the internet.

You aren't really being taught. You're being handed an enormous pile of possible teachers and told to sort them out.

AI changes that relationship.

Instead of searching for an answer, I can have a conversation about the problem. I can say, "I don't understand this part." I can ask why. I can describe my particular situation. I can challenge the answer. I can ask a follow-up question that didn't occur to me until I understood the previous answer. I can keep going until the thing actually makes sense.

It isn't infallible. Neither were books, websites, YouTube videos, teachers, experts or the guy at the hardware store who confidently told you something completely wrong.

The important difference is interaction.

Google can give me 19,383 pages about hanging drywall.

AI can help me hang my drywall.

That's a profound change in how ordinary people can interact with accumulated human knowledge, and profound changes make people nervous.

Maybe AI will eliminate some jobs. Refrigeration certainly did. Maybe it will create others. Refrigeration did that too. Maybe entire industries will have to rethink what value they actually provide once information that previously required specialized intermediaries becomes easier for ordinary people to access and understand.

We should absolutely think about the consequences.

But we should also be careful not to mistake disruption for apocalypse.

Human civilization is a long history of technologies making previous ways of doing things unnecessary. The printing press did it. Electricity did it. Refrigeration did it. Automobiles did it. Computers did it. The internet did it.

Every generation inherits a world transformed by technologies that earlier generations once found strange, threatening or unnecessary. Then those technologies become so ordinary that nobody thinks about them anymore.

Today, nobody opens the refrigerator and marvels that there is a machine in the kitchen manufacturing winter around the clock.

We just reach inside and get the milk.

Maybe artificial intelligence really will change civilization as we know it.

Fine.

Civilization as the iceman knew it changed too.

And the milk stayed cold.
